Our Journey

Gillian @OneGiantStep

I turned 45 yesterday. I know, I can’t believe it either!

Here are 45 random things about me. Just because.

  1. I am an introvert except that I love large crowds and quiet, intimate, conversations terrify me.
  2. I am English born, Canadian bred.
  3. I just quit my job to do I’m-not-quite-sure-what I’m-not-quite-sure-where.
  4. I am excited by the possibility
  5. I love beer, and trying new beers.
  6. I like a good old fashioned, strong, cocktail. No girlie drinks here, thank you very much.
  7. Gin and Tonic is my favourite.
  8. I can juggle, although not very well.
  9. I love mountain biking and was pretty good at it until I sold my bike recently to live in the world.
  10. I have had both my knees reconstructed due to mountain biking accidents.
  11. I recently discovered hot yoga and no longer think it’s for sissy’s.
  12. I am proud of myself.
  13. I am divorced.
  14. I don’t believe in second marriages but am head over heels for my long time partner, Jason.
  15. I have no children; never wanted them.
  16. I don’t feel 45.
  17. I do not have an artistic bone in my body.
  18. I have one sister and one brother; they live in the same town we grew up in.
  19. I got my wanderlust from my parents; they came here from England with little more than I have right now. They did well, and so will we.
  20. I used to be afraid of flying; and then I talked myself out of it. True story.
  21. I love both cities and being way off the grid, but small towns bore me.
  22. My favourite travel memories are of really hard times or really simple times.
  23. I love traveling by bus and staring out the window for hours on end.
  24. Currently everything Jason and I own fits in four boxes, one large sack, two large backpacks, two daypacks, two satchel bags and a small suitcase. Everything.
  25. I am hard to get to know.
  26. I don’t cry easily, although that is changing as I get older.
  27. I don’t believe we should all ‘act our age’ but I also don’t think we should spend time chasing youth.
  28. I feel 32.
  29. I am a big time procrastinator.
  30. I don’t have any tattoos.
  31. I wish I could sing.
  32. I’m a Sagittarian.
  33. I used to think Virgin was also an astrological sign.
  34. I can’t do a chin up no matter how in-shape I am.
  35. The thought of scuba diving terrifies me. You can’t breathe down there!
  36. I believe we all want the same things in life; happiness, a sense of peace, and a feeling of having done what we want to do. We just all get there a different way.
  37. I hate doing laundry and vacuuming (Jason does it all).
  38. I don’t mind doing dishes (I do them all).
  39. I have a terrible memory.
  40. I have Crohn’s Disease; luckily it is controlled by medication.
  41. I also have Psoriasis. I think the two are related. But not related to #39.
  42. I have very neat handwriting.
  43. I speak only English.
  44. I wish I could speak another language. It is one of my goals.
  45. I don’t know what my future holds but I can’t wait to find out.

C’mon…share. Tell me one thing about you.

Lucky for you, you also look 32! I am in shock you’re 45.

I agree with so many of these! Especially no girly drinks. :)

When I was younger, I used to want to be able to play at least 4 instruments. I was on my way–by high school I played the flute and could play the trumpet (and sing, if you want to count that), but gave up flute in college. I also want to speak another language (I speak Spanish and a little French).

Awesome Gillian!…did you make that call yet;)
I’m seriously considering a tattoo…(too late for the 25% deal on beers, though I think it is a Sunday thing!!)

  6. Dalene Says:

Happy birthday Gillian! I had a good LOL at #33. I’m a good, strong, cocktail girl too, although my drink of choice is whiskey. (Although I believe, thanks to the recent development of migraines, that I have to give that up. My life is over as I know it.) :)

  10. Katie Says:

    Happy birthday!
I started reading your blog a few months ago and have been enjoying both the archives and reading about your current adventure.

I really like #22 “My favorite travel memories are of really hard times or really simple times.”

We have several things in common (and several others definitely not!). I will tell you two things:
    1) I am planning my own RTW trip with my longtime partner (hence how I found your blog).
    2) Even though I am trying to save as much money as possible for a longer trip, I am hoping to learn to cross-country ski this winter. I have never done any type of winter sports before!

  11. Glenda Says:

This is an awesome post… I might have to borrow this idea for an end-of-the-year post on my blog. Do you mind?

    1. I have 2 tattoos.
    2. I cry all the time.
    3. I wish I could speak another language fluently.
    4. I am divorced.
    5. I’m really honoured to have you as a friend and glad I’ve gotten to know you.

I know you said one, that’s five… apparently my math isn’t so great.

It’s a really lovely photo. Happy birthday. My random thing – I have been meaning to try making vegan sushi for at least the last two years and still haven’t done it. Great list :)

The photo was taken by my very good friend last week. She did a great job of making me look pretty, and young!

What would you put in vegan sushi? I always think fish when I think sushi…good luck with it!

Totally blown away that you are 45 years old!! I loved reading your list
My one thing? I’m a major introvert and have to convince myself to be social…then it’s over the top!

  15. Arti Says:

Wish you a very Happy 32nd Birthday!!! Its great that you feel 32 instead of 45! Age is just a number :)

    • Gillian Says:

Thanks Arti. Someone once told me that you’re only as old as you feel. I believe it. My ‘feeling’ age is creeping up too (it used to be 26) but at a much slower rate than my real age!

  16. Steph (@ 20 Years Hence) Says:

Wonderful post, Gillian, and a very happy birthday to you! Put me in the camp of those admirers who think you look more like 45 going on 32… must have something to do with being so young at heart!

I’m a perfectionist & a procrastinator, which is a pretty terrible combination! Part of what I hope to get out of our year of travel is a heightened ability to live for the moment and stop letting my fears define me.

  17. Ali Says:

Happy birthday Gillian! Great list! I’m not sure if I knew you have Crohn’s, I actually have colitis. I like the ones where you talk about age. I often feel way older or way younger than my age, sometimes in the same day. I also have no desire for kids. Never wanted them, and luckily Andy and I are 100% on the same page about that issue.

I’m so excited for you to be starting your new journey and a new chapter in your life. I hope we run into you on the road someday soon!

    • Gillian Says:

Thanks Ali. Good you found Andy to be on the same page re: kids. It became a topic for all my first dates when I was dating – I didn’t want to waste any time on someone who would be wanting a family! I hope we see you somewhere in the world!

It’s fun reading about you! Meaning, you’re a fun and interesting person!

  19. Randy Says:

    Well you don’t look it.
I’ve got 12 years on you and I feel better today than when I did in my 30′s. All that mountain biking I think.
    I too have no tatoos….yet.
    One of these days…maybe?

  20. Leigh Says:

Great post Gillian, I would never have put you at 45. Honest. But then would you have put be at 65? Just kidding – only 55. Something new about me – my 29 year old son just got engaged.

I can’t sing worth shit or dance. I have until November to learn how to dance – and buy a dress as the mother of the groom. I hope its a barefoot wedding. That would be my style now. I guess I have no say though.

A belated happy birthday to you.
May you have a great year.

A pisces who is scared of water – that’s unusual I think! Yes, an introvert. Our meeting the other week was a little nerve wracking but I really wanted to meet you – I make myself step out sometimes. And it was totally worth it :)

      • Darlene Says:

Yeah I know right?! (water thing) I blame my mom she is too and passed it along. Neither of my parents swim.

I had no idea you were anxious about our meeting. What is it about the one on one that gets you?
