Monday Moment: Waiting For Elephants in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand
We had seen elephants at the elephant camp near Chiang Mai but I really wanted to see them in the wild. We headed out to Khao Yai National Park in central Thailand specifically for the hike through the jungle and grasslands where a pack of elephants were known to live.
The hike was beautiful but oh-how-it-rained! We took refuge in a wildlife viewing platform where we peered out into the rain for a couple of hours willing the elephants to show. Turns out it didn’t matter how much I wanted to see an elephant; it just wasn’t in the cards for that day and we returned to town with no elephant sightings.
Awww my heart broke for you!
Sounds like us driving around looking for kangaroos in Australia. Sorry you weren’t as lucky.

I know that you have a great experience at Chiang Mai, I think I need also to gain that kind of unforgotten things.. This coming summer vacation is a perfect time for that.
Ah, that’s too bad :( Khao Yai National Park is quite gorgeous though. i was there in 2008.

Almost the exact same thing happened to me about a week ago. I wanted to see elephants in the wild so badly but it wasn’t meant to be. To make matters worse, the group that went the next day was successful :(
Same here Phil! The morning group came back with tales of an elephant/jeep stand off in the roadway and of seeing baby elephants…and we saw nothing. Disappointing. I’m sorry you didn’t see any either.
