Anna,

As a Mac fan you should check out the comment thread posted over at <a href="http://www.nomadbackpackers.com/2008/09/23/seduced-by-the-dark-side#comments" title="Seduced by the Dark Side" rel="nofollow">Nomad Backpackers</a>.

Being not a fan of MS OS's we went with a Linux laptop. You can always wipeout the pre-installed MS product to install any of the free Linux distributions.

Cheers,
Jason

I am investing in a new laptop myself ( I currently have a Toshiba Satellite- but its too big to travel with). I am looking into buying a Macbook before I leave. (Supposedly a new better, faster AND cheaper model is due out Oct 14 - or so the rumours say) However, its pricey and I would cry alot if it got stolen.

Hi,
Read your last update you didn't mention that we were one of the first in Nipigon to have a computer, a Commodore Pet. Just think, because you were deprived of all the latest electronics when growing up you are now prepared to travel to third world countries and feel at home. :)
Your picture attached to the last e-mail was out of focus or there was hair on your face and head. It would be easier to travel and not worry about shaving regularly. What about your passport photo? There won't be a match.

Nice choice. I've been traveling with the EeePC 701 8G (The original one they released with a 7 inch screen.) and have successfully drank many a beer in it's presence!

I (mostly) love it. Takes up almost no space in my backpack, light, cheap enough that it's not a total heart-break if it gets stolen, etc. The main pain factor about it is that the keyboard and screen are a bit too small. I actually bought an external keyboard for when I'm staying in apartments and need to type a lot.

I fought with myself about whether or not I wanted to bring it initially. I'm SO glad I did. Trying to use internet cafes is an inconvenient way to get your passwords and credit card numbers swiped. Common computers in hostels are always in use. I can let it sit there and upload my photos and videos overnight. (I always try to upload things regularly in case it or my camera were to get stolen.)
