It’s a land with a living past; an ancient culture and civilization that is still embedded within the day to day life of this ancient country.

Standing among the Incan ruins I try to imagine what life must have been like. Building these great structures without our modern machinery must have been an impressive feat of strength and engineering. The bustling marketplace, alive with all manner of commerce and business, must have been the centre of it all just as it is today.

Were they isolated? Was it a stand alone culture cut off from the rest of the world? Or were the highways and byways clogged with traffic as merchants and businessmen, travellers and wanderers, made their way from town to town?

Peru is, for me, a land of contrasts. Ancient and modern, sophisticated and yet still rustic, steeped in culture and filled with new delights. It is possible to walk the path of the ancient Incans and be treated with the height of luxury at the end of a tiring day. The cuisine is filled with historical ingredients and recipes brought to new heights with modern techniques and palettes. On the streets you’ll hear a mix of old world Spanish and even older world Quechua, the native language of the founders fathers.

It’s a place to be seen to be believed, to be experienced to be understood, and to enjoy a sense of wonder as you wander the ancient pathways.
